Home Owners Electrical Safety Tips
The smoke detector is the best and easiest way for a homeowner to achieve early warning fire detection. For homeowners who use propane or natural gas a carbon monoxide detector is a great safety feature to have as well as smoke detectors.
According to the National Fire Protection Association standard #72 smoke detectors should be installed outside of every sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms.
In new construction a smoke detector should be installed in every bedroom as well as in the vicinity of, but outside of the bedrooms.
Interconnected smoke alarms can provide earlier fire warning than stand alone units especially if a fire starts in a remote area of the home.
Testing and maintaining of your smoke alarm is very important. Testing should be done once a week according to National Fire Protection Association. Although smoke alarms are virtually maintenance free, under dusty conditions a vacuum hose may be used to remove dust from the sensing chamber and the exterior of the alarm. This should be done once a month under dusty conditions.
Battery backup smoke alarms have a nine-volt battery, which should last for at least one year. Routine maintenance should include changing the battery once a year. Remember a smoke alarm cannot work without 120-volt power or battery alarms cannot work if batteries are missing or dead. In a fire situation the electricity is one of the most likely things to go off. Most smoke detectors have a nine- volt battery backup power supply, but if the batteries are dead the alarm will not work in this situation.
Smoke alarms have a limited life. The unit should be replaced immediately if it is not operating properly. You should always replace a smoke alarm if it is older than ten years old.
By installing smoke alarms in your home you may be eligible for lower insurance rates.
Article 760 of the National Electrical Code states that wiring and installation of a 120-volt smoke alarm be installed by a licensed electrician. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in injury or property damage.
